Basic Information
Historical Context
Multiple-figure study sheets like this one are characteristic of Menzel's working method. Rather than creating isolated, finished portraits, he often filled pages with successive drawings of the same model in different expressions or different models with related poses, using the page as a kind of visual notebook. This practice allowed him to compare forms, refine his understanding of facial structure, and capture the fleeting variations of expression. Such sheets were both artistic exercises in their own right and reservoirs of visual material to draw upon when composing larger works.
Artistic Appreciation
What is striking about this study sheet is its vitality and variety. Menzel arranges the heads across the page with an intuitive sense of rhythm — left side open and sparse, right side dense with overlapping forms. Every head is in profile, yet each has a completely different character: the smiling bald man, the dreamy curly-haired youth, the attentive younger man, the bearded older figure. The charcoal technique varies accordingly — from delicate, searching lines to dense, textured hatching and broad smudged areas of shadow. The absence of a signature is typical of working study sheets, which were not necessarily intended for exhibition or sale. This sheet reveals Menzel as a restless observer, never satisfied with a single likeness but always probing further, testing different expressions, different ages, different degrees of finish. It is a document of artistic curiosity in its purest form. ---
Studies of Male Heads in Profile
Visual Description
The page is populated with multiple studies of male heads and busts, all shown in profile facing toward the right. At the far left, an unfinished back-and-shoulder outline is sketched with sparse charcoal lines. Toward the center-left, a more complete bust-length figure appears: a man balding on top with hair at the sides, smiling broadly with visible teeth, wearing a collared coat with rich tonal modeling on the shoulder and back. Slightly right of center, a more loosely sketched head study shows a man with curly hair and an open, somewhat vague expression, rendered in translucent, layered strokes. In the lower right, a fairly complete bust of a younger man with curly hair faces right, his mouth slightly open in an expression of attention or mild surprise, wearing a collared shirt or jacket with fine hatching on the collar and shoulder. In the upper right, the head of an older man with curly or tousled hair and a beard and mustache looks out with a clearer profile. The page reads as a sequence of observations, each capturing a different age, expression, and degree of finish.
