Basic Information
Historical Context
This painting represents a second version of a composition that Cuyp explored multiple times, a practice that was common in Dutch Golden Age workshops. The replication of successful compositions served several purposes: it allowed artists to meet demand for popular subjects, it provided training opportunities for apprentices, and it reflected a conception of painting in which the "invention" of a composition was valued as highly as its unique execution. The existence of multiple versions of the same composition also raises interesting questions about originality and authenticity in seventeenth-century art -- questions that continue to shape scholarship on Cuyp and his contemporaries. While closely related to the earlier version (Painting 18 in this catalog), this second version shows subtle differences in tone, detail, and framing that reflect the evolving hand of the master and the workshop practices of the era.
Artistic Appreciation
This second version of the resting cattle composition offers an opportunity to observe Cuyp's workshop practices and the subtle variations between versions of the same motif. While the overall composition is nearly identical to the first version (Painting 18), there are differences in tone, lighting, and detail that give this version its own character. The overall color temperature appears slightly darker and warmer, with a deeper golden tone suffusing the sunlit areas and richer, darker shadows. The presence of the brown outer frame is a notable feature, both physically affecting the viewer's perception of the painting and historically significant as evidence of framing practices in the period. Artistically, the work shares the same strengths as the first version: powerful chiaroscuro, beautifully rendered cattle, and dramatic clouds. The strong contrast between the bright left sky and the dark right-side clouds creates a theatrical, almost stage-like lighting effect that heightens the emotional resonance of the scene. The reclining tan cow in the foreground remains the primary focal point, its warm golden form drawing the eye and serving as a point of entry into the landscape. The overall mood is one of solemn, quiet grandeur -- a pastoral scene elevated by the dramatic sky and the golden light to something approaching the sacred. ---
Cattle Resting on a Riverbank with Herdsmen (II)
Visual Description
A group of cattle rests on a grassy riverbank beneath a dramatic sky of towering cumulus clouds. In the right foreground, a light tan cow with a white face lies on the ground, facing right, its coat glowing in warm golden light. Behind it stands a large black cow or bull, facing left, its head held high with horns clearly visible. Further back, several more cattle -- brown and black -- lie or half-lie on the grassy slope, arranged diagonally as they recede into space. In the right background, two herdsmen stand among the cattle: one standing figure in a dark hat and brown clothing, holding a long staff; and beside him, a seated figure in a light-colored wide-brimmed hat and dark top. They appear to be conversing or resting. To the left, a river or lake extends across the composition, its calm surface reflecting the sky and the distant hills on the far bank. The sky is dramatically divided between bright light on the left and deep shadow on the right: the left side glows with pale white light, while the right side and upper portion are filled with massive, heavy cumulus clouds in deep grey-blue and purple-grey tones, their edges illuminated by sunlight from the left. The clouds possess immense volume and weight. A hawk or falcon soars in the upper right sky, and a small flock of birds flies in the distance. The foreground is filled with lush, dark vegetation -- large-leaved burdock-like plants, ferns, and tall grasses in deep green and brown tones. The entire composition is framed by a brown outer border, suggesting the painting was conceived with a specific framing in mind or that it has been preserved with its original frame.
