Cattle Standing in a River at Evening

Visual Description

Five cattle stand in the shallow waters of a wide river or estuary, bathed in the warm golden light of evening. From left to right: a dark brown cow with its head turned left; a brown-and-white patterned cow facing forward, slightly turned right; a black cow showing only its back and head; a light brown or tan cow in the right foreground, facing right and positioned closest to the viewer; and a black cow on the far right, its head lowered to drink. The still water beneath them reflects their legs and lower bodies with remarkable clarity, creating near-mirror images that double their forms. The river stretches across the lower half of the canvas, its calm surface also reflecting the sky and clouds. In the foreground, tall reeds and rushes rise from the water in shades of dry yellow and brown, forming a natural frame that enhances the sense of depth. The sky above is vast and dramatic, occupying roughly half the canvas. Near the horizon on the left, the sky glows with a warm yellow-gold light, gradually transitioning to pale blue higher up. Massive cumulus clouds fill the sky -- great voluminous forms in white, grey, and blue-grey, their undersides deeply shadowed, their tops catching the last light of day. In the distance on the left bank, a church with a steeple and several low buildings are visible along the shore. Further out on the water, at least three sailing ships with light sails can be seen. Two groups of birds fly in the sky: two birds side by side on the upper left, and a formation of five birds lower down.
