Historical Context
Following Japan's opening to foreign trade in the mid-19th century, ukiyo-e prints and Japanese handicrafts flooded European markets, giving rise to the Japonisme art movement. Menzel encountered Japanese workshops and collections in Berlin and produced several Japan-themed drawings, of which this is a representative example from his mature period. The work embodies a blend of European romanticized imagination and attentive observation of Japanese culture.

The drawing demonstrates extraordinarily rich hatching layers: Menzel uses graphite strokes of varying weight and density to differentiate the textures of fabric, foliage, wood, ceramics, and paper.
