Basic Information
Historical Context
This portrait was painted in 1865, depicting Prussian Minister of State Alexander von Schleinitz (1807-1885). Schleinitz was an important statesman of the Kingdom of Prussia, holding key posts in cultural and foreign affairs during the reign of Wilhelm I. As a Prussian court painter, Menzel was commissioned to paint portraits of numerous dignitaries and nobles; this work belongs to this "official portrait" series. 1865 was a time when the Kingdom of Prussia was growing ever stronger and preparing for German unification; this portrait also carried the historical mission of recording the prominent figures of the era.
Artistic Appreciation
This portrait is a successful example of Menzel's "official portrait" style. Unlike the grand narratives of his early history paintings, Menzel here pursues a kind of intimate, natural presentation of the figure. Schleinitz's smile breaks the solemn stereotype of traditional official portraiture, conveying the subject's personal charm and political confidence. Menzel's treatment of clothing texture is especially outstanding: the nap of the coat, the luster of the shirt, and the softness of the silk scarf are all vividly rendered in pastel's blending. The small yellow flower (or medal) on the chest is the finishing touch of the image, adding a lively touch of color to the overall sober palette. The entire work preserves the dignity of court portraiture while not losing the Realist's sincere concern for human nature.
Minister of State Freiherr von Schleinitz
Visual Description
The image depicts a frontal half-length portrait of a middle-aged man. He wears a dark long coat, a light blue shirt, and a dark waistcoat; around his neck is a blue silk scarf or tie, and on his chest is pinned a yellow-green medal or floral decoration. The man's hair is naturally full; his face bears a gentle smile, his gaze kind and confident. The background is a warm brown, and in the lower right corner are Menzel's signature and the date notation "65." The work is executed in pastel or wax crayon on toned paper, emphasizing the texture of the clothing and the ruddy complexion of the face through the superimposition of multiple colors.
