Historical Context

This is a late head study by Menzel, depicting a man with a thick beard. In the second half of the nineteenth century Menzel produced a large number of portrait sketches of Berliners from every social stratum, from royalty and aristocrats to workers and beggars. This sustained attention to "ordinary people" makes Menzel's oeuvre an encyclopedia of nineteenth-century German social life. The identity of this sitter is unknown, but from his thick beard and plain clothing he was probably a craftsman, artisan, or lower-class citizen—precisely the type of subject Menzel particularly favored.

Artistic Appreciation

This study is the ultimate display of Menzel's "beard technique." In the history of European drawing, the rendering of hair texture has always been a crucial test of a painter's skill, and Menzel here demonstrates a virtuosic command verging on bravura. He does not treat the beard with a generalizing dark mass; instead he constructs a volume that is simultaneously fluffy and solid out of thousands of independent curved lines—each hair possesses its own direction of growth, curvature, and light-catching surface. This "line-becomes-surface" technique is the result of Menzel's long observation and reflects his deep understanding of cross-hatching techniques from printmaking. Even more moving is the figure's expression: that upward gaze and parted lips make this ordinary bearded man appear to be experiencing some revelation or emotion, lending the study an emotional force that transcends mere portraiture.

Study of a Bearded Man

Visual Description

The image presents a middle-aged man in profile, facing left, his head slightly lifted, his gaze directed into the distance, his lips slightly parted as if speaking or exclaiming. Most striking is his thick, curly long beard, extending from chin to chest like a dark curtain. The artist uses extremely dense yet orderly lines to delineate the curl and direction of every hair, creating rich textural layers between black and white. The man's forehead is broad, his eyebrows thick, and his eyes reveal a naive, fervent light. Traces of Menzel's signature and date appear in the lower right.
