Historical Context

This figure study demonstrates Menzel's penetrating observation of portraiture. If confirmed as Study of an Italian Girl (1882), it belongs to the series of figure sketches Menzel produced during his repeated trips to Italy in his later years. Throughout his life, Menzel maintained the practice of drawing, always carrying a sketchbook wherever he went and making immediate records of various people. His Italian journeys provided him with a wealth of figure types and lighting conditions, and this work was likely born during that period.

Artistic Appreciation

The most striking aspect of this work is its lively sense of being "unfinished." Menzel outlined the figure's posture and the structure of the drapery with rapid, confident lines, without pursuing excessive refinement, instead preserving the charm of sketching's immediacy. The rendering of the figure's face is delicate and meticulous; the wrinkles, gaze, and lines at the corners of the mouth convey rich character traits. The appended color notations reveal Menzel's working method: first establishing form and chiaroscuro in monochrome drawing, then marking a color scheme for later reference. This scientific creative process is an important characteristic of Menzel as a master of Realism.

Study of a Woman

Visual Description

The image depicts an elderly woman seated in profile, her head turned toward the left side of the picture. She wears a traditional-style dress with multiple layers of pleats and lace decorations at the neckline and chest. In the upper left corner of the sheet, there is also a sketch of a man's face in profile, showing that this is a multi-subject study page. The sheet contains Menzel's handwritten color notations, "roth" (red) and "blau" (blue), indicating that this drawing may have served as a color key for a subsequent work in color. The overall image is built up with graphite lines, supplemented by charcoal shading, presenting a typical 19th-century Realist drawing style.
