Basic Information
Historical Context
This work was created when Menzel was nineteen and is among his earliest independent drawings. In 1834 the young Menzel was still working in his father's lithographic workshop in Breslau, steadily improving his skills through copying old masters and drawing from life. This type of "study sheet" (Studienblatt), combining multiple heads on a single sheet, was a traditional form of academic draftsmanship instruction in Europe, designed to train the painter's ability to capture different human characteristics in a short time. Menzel had not yet entered a formal academy, but through self-study he had already mastered this classical training method.
Artistic Appreciation
This small study sheet is an early manifesto of Menzel's draftsmanship genius. On a paper surface of only 13 x 11.6 cm, the artist presents three utterly different life stages and mental states with breathtaking economy: the young woman's shyness and pensiveness, the middle-aged man's curiosity and absorption, the old man's wisdom and gentleness. The pencil lines vary from delicate to bold: the smoothness of the woman's skin, the shadow of the man's hat brim, the transparency of the old man's spectacles are all captured. Especially noteworthy is the woman's gesture of touching her lips—a slightly neurotic movement suggesting inner unease or expectation, showing that at nineteen Menzel already possessed a psychological insight transcending mere technique. From an art-historical perspective, this early study already contains all the core traits of Menzel's maturity: precision, acuity, compassion, and respect for the dignity of ordinary people.
Study Sheet with Heads
Visual Description
The vertical composition presents three (or four) heads of different ages and sexes, overlapping and interweaving to form an organic whole. Dominating the lower portion of the sheet is the profile of a young woman facing left, her right hand lightly touching her lower lip, her expression pensive, her chignon secured with a pearl pin. In the upper left is a middle-aged man in a wide-brimmed hat, holding binoculars (or opera glasses) to his eyes as if watching something. In the upper right is a bald elderly gentleman with round spectacles, smiling warmly, his expression kind. The artist's signature and date "A. Menzel / 34" appear in the upper right.
