Basic Information
Historical Context
One of Sisley's Moret bridge series from 1888, set against a bright spring sky. Signature "Sisley 88" appears in the lower right.
Artistic Appreciation
This painting demonstrates Sisley's compositional strategy of using trees as a natural "frame," creating depth and guiding the viewer into the scene. The Moret bridge appears in approximately twenty Sisley paintings and is his most persistent subject. Water reflections are handled with horizontal broken color patches capturing the gentle movement of the river surface. Unlike Monet, who subordinated architecture to atmospheric effects, Sisley maintained greater interest in architectural structure and the relationship between natural and built environments.
The Bridge at Moret-sur-Loing, Spring (Le Pont de Moret-sur-Loing, Printemps)
Visual Description
The composition features tall poplar trees as a framing device, revealing a panoramic view of the town of Moret through the foliage. The stone bridge with multiple arches connects both banks. The Gothic Church of Notre-Dame and tower structures are visible in the distance. Two tiny figures -- a woman and child -- stand on the grassy riverbank in the foreground. The water surface reflects sky and buildings. Dense green tree canopy forms a lush frame.
