Basic Information
Historical Context
The earlier of two versions (the later in London's National Gallery), generally considered Leonardo's autograph. Commissioned for the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in Milan. A protracted dispute led to a second version possibly with workshop assistance. Illustrates the apocryphal meeting of the Christ Child and infant John the Baptist during the Holy Family's flight into Egypt.
Artistic Appreciation
Landmark in High Renaissance composition. Pyramidal arrangement creates intimate yet monumental grouping. Leonardo's sfumato reaches new heights in atmospheric grotto rendering. Geological accuracy reflects study from nature. Mystical quality embodies Renaissance ideal of unifying knowledge and beauty.
