Historical Context

Dated 1867 and inscribed "Berl." for Berlin, this pastel portrait was executed during a decade of intense creative activity for Menzel. The 1860s saw him working on his monumental *Coronation of King Wilhelm I* while also producing a steady stream of portraits, genre scenes, and studies. The historical costume — the fur-trimmed coat, the soft cap, the jeweled casket — suggests that this may be either a portrait of a historical figure for one of Menzel's history painting projects, or a contemporary sitter posing in fancy dress. Menzel was a master of the pastel medium, which he used with particular effectiveness for portraits where he sought to capture both the softness of flesh and the richness of textiles and decorative objects.

Artistic Appreciation

This is one of Menzel's most impressive pastel portraits, notable for its extraordinary command of material textures. Working in pastel on toned paper, Menzel creates a symphony of contrasting surfaces: the soft, fluffy texture of the fur trim, the silken drape of the robe, the crisp delicacy of the lace cuffs, the metallic sheen of the jeweled casket, the wiry volume of the long beard, and the warm translucency of the skin — all are differentiated with astonishing precision. The composition is pyramidal and stable: the head at the apex, the shoulders and arms forming the sides, and the hands and casket at the base. The lighting is directed from the upper left, modeling the face and beard with clear form, and creating brilliant highlights on the metal casket and the jewels. Yet the painting's power is not merely technical. The direct gaze of the subject — intense, intelligent, slightly weary — establishes a compelling psychological connection with the viewer. The signature "Ad. Menzel Berl. 67" in the upper left is both a documentation of authorship and place, and a compositional counterweight to the figure. ---

Visual Description

A half-length portrait of an older man shown frontally, slightly turned toward the viewer's right. He wears a dark soft cap tied with a band. His face is lean with a high forehead and deep, penetrating eyes that look directly out at the viewer. He has an exceptionally long, thick, curling beard of gray-white that descends to his chest — the individual strands and curls of the beard are rendered with dazzling technical virtuosity. He wears a dark robe beneath a brown fur-trimmed coat; the fur's texture is thick and plush, rendered in soft, blended pastel strokes. White lace cuffs emerge from the sleeves. His hands rest on a table before him: his right hand (viewer's left) has long, slender fingers and holds a thin cord or chain; his left hand rests on an ornate metal casket or small box. The casket is decorated with relief carvings and inset with red jewels, its surface gleaming. A ring is visible on his right hand. The background is a warm, hazy brown that dissolves into atmosphere.
