Basic Information
Historical Context
This extraordinary study of General Helmuth von Moltke's military greatcoat, annotated with the dates of the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871), is a work of unique historical and artistic significance. Moltke, the chief of the Prussian General Staff, was the architect of Prussia's military victories in the wars of German unification, and one of the most celebrated figures of nineteenth-century Germany. Menzel, who had connections to the Prussian military leadership and painted numerous military subjects, obtained or studied Moltke's actual coat from the French campaign and made this detailed study — complete with measurements, construction details, and historical annotations. The work is thus both a work of art and a historical document: a record of a specific garment worn by a specific person during a specific conflict.
Artistic Appreciation
This work defies easy categorization: it is simultaneously a drawing, a study sheet, a design document, and a historical artifact. The composition is dominated by the central image of the coat, which fills most of the vertical sheet — a powerful, sculptural form rendered with three-dimensional conviction. Menzel's technique on toned paper is masterful: the dark charcoal or ink establishes the deep shadows and the weight of the fabric, the white chalk or gouache picks out the highlights on the raised folds and edges, and the brown paper provides the mid-tone that unifies the whole. The coat has real volume and weight — one can feel the heavy wool and the way it drapes and folds. What makes the work extraordinary, however, is the dialogue between the central image and the surrounding annotations and studies. The measurements, the construction details, the historical notes, and the partial studies of collars, buttons, and sleeves transform the drawing from a purely artistic representation into a comprehensive document — something between a fashion plate, an archaeological record, and a work of art. The handwriting — "Gen. Moltke's," "Französisch 1870-71" — grounds the coat in a specific historical moment, giving it an almost relic-like significance. Menzel's signature at the top left and in the text below confirms his authorship and his role as both artist and historian. The overall effect is one of intense, almost reverent attention: Menzel studies this coat not merely as a piece of clothing but as a bearer of history, a material trace of a man and a moment that changed the course of Europe. It is a work that exemplifies the essence of Menzel's realism: the belief that the most ordinary objects, when observed with sufficient care and intelligence, can reveal the most profound truths about history and humanity. --- ## VII. Study of a Military Greatcoat (General Moltke's Coat)
Visual Description
A long military greatcoat — a double-breasted overcoat or cloak reaching nearly to the ankles — is displayed frontally, open to show the interior. It has wide lapels with buttons at the collar. The left sleeve (on the viewer's right) is bent upward at the elbow, with the hand tucked into a pocket, creating a complex arrangement of folds. The right sleeve (on the viewer's left) extends outward, showing the shape and length of the arm. The heavy fabric of the coat falls in deep, substantial folds, particularly around the bent arm and at the hem. Around the central image of the coat, the sheet is filled with supplementary studies and handwritten annotations in German. At the top are studies of the collar detail, button sketches, and measurements such as "4 ellen" and "3'3"." Along the left side are structural diagrams of the sleeve with dimension markings ("Arm l 25" and the like). At the bottom, extensive handwritten text includes: "Gen. Moltke's" (General Moltke's), "Französisch 1870-71" (French [campaign] 1870-71), and "Civil-Mantel von ihm aus dem Kriege..." (his civilian coat from the war...), along with other notes and measurements. The brown paper of the sheet provides a warm middle tone throughout.
