Basic Information
Historical Context
This dynamic study of two male heads both looking upward exemplifies Menzel's lifelong practice of studying the human figure in action. The upward gaze, with its anatomical challenges — the stretching of the neck muscles, the foreshortening of the features, the play of light on the underside of the chin and jaw — would have been a problem of particular interest to a realist draftsman. Such studies were likely made from models and stored as visual reference for the many figures in Menzel's large-scale compositions, whether historical scenes of crowds or contemporary genre subjects. The intense, almost reverent quality of the upward gaze also connects this study to religious and allegorical traditions of representation.
Artistic Appreciation
Menzel arranges the two heads in a layered composition that creates spatial depth on a small scale: the foreground head is larger, darker, and more sharply defined, while the background head is slightly smaller and more restrained. Both share the same upward gaze, creating a unified diagonal movement from lower right to upper left. The drawing technique is vigorous and expressive, particularly in the hair of the foreground figure, where bold, directional strokes build up a mass of curly hair with almost sculptural volume. The rendering of the neck muscles is noteworthy for its anatomical accuracy and structural understanding — Menzel clearly understands how the head's upward tilt stretches and engages the musculature. The lighting comes from the upper left, catching the forehead, nose, and cheekbone of each figure, while the underside of the jaw and the neck fall into shadow. The effect is both structurally rigorous and emotionally charged — these are not merely anatomical studies but studies of attention and wonder. The cursive signature in the lower left confirms the attribution. ---
Two Male Heads in Profile Looking Up (Study)
Visual Description
Two male heads and partial shoulders are shown in profile, both facing left and both looking upward toward the upper left. The head in the foreground (on the right side of the sheet) is more fully realized: the man has thick, curly dark hair rendered with energetic, swirling strokes that convey volume and movement. The structure of the ear is precisely drawn. The neck is strongly muscled, with the sternocleidomastoid and clavicle clearly defined — evidence of Menzel's anatomical knowledge. The shoulder and collar of a garment are visible. Behind this figure and slightly to the left, a second head appears, partially overlapping the first. It is shown in the same upward-gazing profile, with a high forehead, strong nose, and slightly open mouth. The expression on both faces is one of intense focus, awe, or anticipation — as if they are witnessing something remarkable just out of the frame.
