Historical Context
The Mona Lisa in the Louvre, Leonardo's autograph masterpiece and the world's most famous painting. Leonardo worked on it from approximately 1503 until his death in 1519. Never delivered to its presumed commissioner Francesco del Giocondo. Became French royal property, entered the Louvre after the Revolution. Stolen in 1911, recovered in 1913. Icon of Western art.
