Basic Information
Historical Context
Leonardo's portrait of Ginevra de' Benci, the only Leonardo painting in the Americas. Panel has been cut down, possibly removing hands. Reverse bears juniper sprig wreath with VIRTUTEM FORMA DECORAT. One of earliest three-quarter view female portraits in Italian art. Acquired by the National Gallery of Art in 1967.
Artistic Appreciation
Broke with Florentine profile tradition. Three-quarter pose enables psychological complexity. Downcast gaze creates interior life. Juniper motif connects identity, virtue, and poetry. Anticipates later portrait masterworks. Important early example of Leonardo's revolutionary portraiture.
