Basic Information
Historical Context
Monumental painting occupying Leonardo for over fifteen years, taken with him to France in 1516. Described by Antonio de Beatis in 1517 as still unfinished. Subject -- intergenerational relationship between Mary and Saint Anne with Christ Child -- was gaining popularity in early 16th-century Florence. Louvre owns both this painting and Leonardo's preparatory cartoon.
Artistic Appreciation
Pinnacle of Leonardo's compositional genius. Interlocking figures create unprecedented spatial and emotional unity across three generations. Virgin's ambiguous smile connects figures psychologically. Lamb introduces narrative tension. Sfumato reaches ultimate expression. Unfinished quality enhances ethereal beauty.
